ResumoBackground: Colonoscopy is the gold standard for lower gastrointestinal diagnostics. The procedure is invasive and the demand for such diagnostics is high resulting in long waiting times. Colon Capsule Endoscopy (CCE) is a procedure that uses a video capsule to investigate the colon. This type of digital health service could reduce costs and waiting times and potentially increase patient satisfaction. Little is currently understood, however, about how this technology is experienced and accepted by patients. Methods: This paper presents the results of a mixed methods service evaluation of the patient experience of a real world deployed managed service for CCE in Scotland. Two hundred and nine patients provided feedback about their experiences by completing a questionnaire. Eighteen of these patients took part in a further telephone interview so we could capture their experiences of the technology and service.Findings: Patients perceived the CCE service to be of value (e.g., reduced travel times, reduced waiting times, freedom to complete the procedure at home). Results also highlighted the importance of clear and accessible information when accessing new digital services and the need for managing expectations of patients when a new service pathway is introduced into a health service.Interpretation: The findings of this evaluation led to recommendations for future implementations of managed CCE services more widely and at scale. Recommendations included: Promote CCE with, for and among clinical teams; Capture and understand reasons why patients do not opt for CCE; Provide clear information in appropriate ways at the right times; Improve bowel preparation; Provide flexible options for returning the kit; Embed formative evaluation within the service.Funding: SCOTCAP was funded jointly by Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE) and Modern Patients Pathway Programme (Scottish Government). Declaration of Interest: None to declare. Ethical Approval: Approval for this project was granted by the Department of Computer and Information Science, University of Strathclyde Ethics Committee 02-08-2019 (ID947).
