Innovative concrete reinforcement materials

The use of performance-based approaches has been widely discussed with a view to designing durable concrete structures. This is because the use of strictly prescriptive specifications has proven insufficient to ensure that structures meet their designed service life, especially when exposed to harsh environments. This paper presents an overview of recent research and developments in performance-based approaches in different countries. Basic concepts, advantages and limitations of prescriptive and performance-based approaches are discussed, and the main test methods for analyzing the potential durability of concrete are presented. Research needs and gaps for the practical implementation of performance approaches are also discussed.
