ResumoExperimental studies have shown that the volume of one ventricle can alter the compliance of the contralateral ventricle, and this effect is accentuated by the pericardium. Some experimental data indicate that ventricular interdependence may be important in the systolic functioning of the ventricles, with the right ventricular systolic function depending, in part, on left ventricular assistance. Ventricular interdependence may be important in understanding the cardiovascular response to sudden changes in ventricular volumes and may also explain the alterations in left ventricular function found in atrial septal defects, mitral stenosis, and cor pulmonale, and the complex response of the right ventricle to coronary artery occlusion. The latter aspects are speculative and more studies are needed to determine the exact nature of ventricular interdependence in these disease processes.
