Resumo

In 2008, we were deeply honored to be selected by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) to serve as Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. Although we have both had the privilege of serving in multiple leadership positions within the Society, including each of us serving as its President, we can state with absolute conviction that there is no more important responsibility or rewarding role in the SVS than to be entrusted with the stewardship of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. The Journal of Vascular Surgery epitomizes vascular surgery leadership in the crowded field of circulatory specialists and epitomizes the position of the SVS as the pre-eminent voice of vascular surgeons in this country and throughout the world. As we complete our seventh year in these positions, and enter our final year of Editorship in January, we reflect with pride on what has been accomplished during our tenure and are confident in our optimism for the Journal's continued success when we pass the reigns of the Journal to our successors. The Journal of Vascular Surgery, by all objective metrics, has become the pre-eminent publication in vascular and endovascular therapy in the world. Over the course of the past 7 years the Journal has had the highest 5-year Impact Factor among all publications in vascular surgery. The academic quality of the publication has been reflected, among other things, by the dramatic growth in the number of submissions received each year. The number of submissions per year has doubled during this period with more than 1800 manuscripts received annually. The Journal has also become a truly international publication, now with <40% of submissions submitted from the United States, and this is in part reflective of our Society, which has a growing international membership and outreach. While remaining true to our core mission of publishing the highest-quality clinical and basic science research papers, we have also introduced over the years a broad range of special features with particular appeal to the practicing vascular surgeon. We believe this has significantly broadened our readership pool. In fact, our success as an academic publication has been paralleled by its growth from a business perspective. At a time of shrinking print advertising, the Journal ranks third among all surgical specialty journals in print advertising pages, and represents the single largest revenue source for the SVS. We are proud of the fact that for the first time in the 30-year history of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, we introduced a new publication, the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, 3 years ago. The SVS and the American Venous Forum collaborated in the sponsorship of this new quarterly peer-reviewed publication. In large part because of the superior quality of the publication, the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders has already been fast tracked for inclusion in Medline, and will soon have an independent Impact Factor. As we enter the fourth year of its publication, it is our vision and our commitment to see this new publication become the leading academic journal in venous and lymphatic diseases, and to highlight the leadership of vascular surgeons in this area. During our term of Editorial leadership we also believed that continued success in any endeavor requires maintaining one's core values and adhering to one's fundamental mission while continuously adapting strategies to a changing world. In fact, the world of academic publishing has been rapidly evolving and one of the most significant changes has been the introduction and growth of open access publishing. Within that context, this year we also introduced the third peer-reviewed publication of the SVS: the Journal of Vascular Surgery Cases. This new journal, devoted exclusively to the publication of the highest quality case reports, represents the Society's full first open access publication. In addition to allowing us to enter this new publishing model, it will allow us to increase publication of case reports, an article type extremely popular among our readership. We remain as enthusiastic today in our roles as we were on the first day that we began this wonderful journey as Editors, and are proud to continue the stewardship of what is now a family of peer-reviewed publications. It has been our editorial mission not only to serve as stewards of the tradition of excellence that has been the hallmark of the Journal of Vascular Surgery since its inception, but to strive to continually improve it. Further, we are excited to be able to continue to guide the maturation of our two newest publications. As we bring this year to a close, we can confidently report that the state of the family of peer-reviewed publications of the SVS is strong, and will continue to become even stronger. While we have remained true to the mission of the Journal in publishing high-quality clinical and basic science research studies, we have also been mindful of our responsibility to serve the educational and practice needs of the broad readership we serve, including practicing vascular and endovascular surgeons in community and academic practices, and surgeons in training. With new information being developed faster than at any time in our history, and practice paradigms continually evolving, as we move forward we will continue to publish special feature articles that will bring this evolving information to our readers in a user-friendly fashion, such as review articles and meta-analyses. The expansion of our publication products represents an affirmation of our commitment to that ideal. Our editorial leadership of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and its partner journals reflects our commitment to their fundamental mission; namely, the publication of the most scholarly clinical and basic science research studies, and unique case reports of interest to the vascular specialist. The high quality of the published work would not be possible without the compulsive, rigorous, thoughtful, and constructive nature of our reviewers' critiques; the support of our partners on the editorial leadership team; and, the excellence and attention to detail of our editorial management team. We are indebted to all of these stakeholders for the thoroughness and fairness of our peer-review process and the smooth operation of the Journal; we truly appreciate their support as we seamlessly launched the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders and the Journal of Vascular Surgery Cases. Entering this new year, our final 6 months as your Editors, we remain mindful of our responsibility to our readership and dedicated to continually improve the quality of our publishing products. We wish you all a wonderful holiday season, and a happy, healthy, and peaceful New Year. The editors use a rigorous peer-review process, in which each submitted manuscript is externally reviewed by at least three people, including at least one member of the Editorial Board, selected for their expertise in the particular topic that is the subject of the manuscript. These reviews are then carefully considered by the Editors. To review this large number of submitted manuscripts, in addition to our Editorial Board members, nearly 400 individuals participated as reviewers for Journal of Vascular Surgery publications during the past year. The Editors acknowledge all of the reviewers who have contributed to this process during that time, and whose efforts are so critical to making the Journal of Vascular Surgery the outstanding scientific publication that it has become. This is a voluntary effort performed by individuals during their personal time to advance the discipline of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. The quality and impact of any scientific journal is primarily dependent on the quality of its peer-review process. We have been extremely impressed by the rigor and insightfulness of reviews performed for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, which, in many cases have substantially improved the quality of our published articles and therefore the overall quality of the Journal of Vascular Surgery publications. The Editors sincerely thank all reviewers for their contributions this past year. We are very grateful for the contributions of our Associate Editors during this past year: Drs Thomas Brothers and Thomas Forbes, who serve as clinical studies Editors, and Dr Peter Henke, who serves as the basic science Editor. Their efforts have ensured the timeliness and quality of our review process, especially during this past year with the increased editorial workload, and they each have contributed significantly to the success and quality of all three publications. We also express our sincerest appreciation to our Assistant Editors who have also participated in the editorial leadership of the three journals. They have helped solicit, select, and write content for various sections, including several new features introduced this year that have significantly broadened and enhanced the overall content and value of the journals for our readership. We are especially grateful to Dr James Jones for his contributions as Editor of the Ethics Section, an extremely influential and popular feature of the Journal. We are also grateful for the leadership of Dr Gregory Moneta for his efforts as Editor of the Abstracts Section, Dr Richard Cambria for his management of the Review Article Section, and Dr Peter Lawrence, who has managed several special features including Vascular & Endovascular Techniques, Practice Management, Clinical Trials Update, and Expert Debates. We especially extend our gratitude and special thanks to Dr Norman Rich for his leadership in developing and his many years of managing our Historical Vignettes feature. Dr Rich is stepping down from this position after many years of stewardship of this feature. His wisdom, insights, and historical knowledge will be missed. As Dr Rich steps down, we welcome Dr James Menzoian, who will take over the Historical Vignettes section, to the editorial leadership. We also thank Dr Sean Roddy, who is responsible for the CPT Advisor's Section, one of several features added to the Journal with the practicing vascular surgeon in mind. We offer special thanks to Dr Lois Killewich, who came on board with the inception of the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, as special features editor; she has been instrumental in the success of this new publication. Each manuscript received by the Editors is rated according to its quality, accuracy, insight, and helpfulness for the authors of the submission and the Editors. Editorial Board members are selected on the basis of an objective evaluation of the quantity, quality, and timeliness of their peer reviews. Our goal is to include as many of our best reviewers as possible on the Editorial Board. Original manuscripts submitted to the Journal are reviewed by at least one member of the Editorial Board, who also submit invited commentaries and perform other duties for the journals. During the past year, members of the Editorial Board each performed an average of 13 reviews and accounted for 27% of all the reviews that were done. The Editors particularly recognize the following Editorial Board members who will be retiring from the Board after many years of valuable service and countless hours of unselfish work in this process. We also welcome the new members of the Editorial Board, selected according to the process described, and who will begin in January. Ali F. AbuRahma Joseph P. Archie Zachary M. Arthurs Jan D. This includes several new reviewers. In nearly all cases these reviews were excellent, and they collectively represented 22% of all reviews, emphasizing the importance of each individual reviewer to the peer-review process. We hope to expand the role of these reviewers in the future, and are very grateful for their efforts this year.
