ResumoFunctional Ecology continues to evolve. In May 1999, John Grace stood down as editor, and was succeeded by David Robinson. John was (with Peter Calow) one of the founding editors of the journal. We, and the readership of Functional Ecology, owe John a huge debt for the work he has put into establishing its identity and reputation. The circulation and the impact factor of the journal both continue to rise, and it is firmly established amongst the foremost ecological publications. The change of editorship has meant that the editorial office for the ‘botanical’ section of Functional Ecology has migrated northwards from Edinburgh, initially to Dundee, and now to Aberdeen – see the inside front cover for details. Associated with these changes, we are acting to reduce the time taken to process manuscripts, with the particular aim of making the journal more responsive to the pace at which ecological thought is presently developing. 1999 also saw significant changes in the composition of our Editorial Board. B. L. Bayne, C. Boggs, T. Fenchel, P. W. Hochachka, B. K. McNab, W. Porter, R. E. Ricklefs, R. M. Sibly, W. B. Watt and R. J. Wooton retired from the Board. They are thanked warmly for their long service to the journal. In their places, initially for three years, we welcome S. L. Chown, A. Clarke, R. B. Huey, T. H. Jones, J. Kozlowski, and J. I. Spicer. These changes reflect the wide spectrum of papers now submitted to Functional Ecology, and assist us in maintaining and improving the quality of the science that we publish. Further changes to the Board will take place in the coming year. As ever, we thank our manuscript reviewers – the value of their input to Functional Ecology cannot be over-estimated. Finally, we are especially grateful to the people who do most of the hard work: our Editorial Assistants, Angela Bottom and her successor, Pat Johnson, in Sheffield, and their counterparts north of the border, Gail Stout at Blackwell Science in Edinburgh, and her successor, Carola Goldmann in Dundee (until February 2000); and our Production Editor at Blackwell Science, Ann Addison.
