ResumoTHE Spitfire, which was designed by the late Mr. R. J. Mitchell at the Supermarine works of Vickers Aviation Ltd. (now Vickers‐Armstrong, Ltd.), was first flown in 1937, so that it is far from being a new aeroplane, although it is still as modern in conception as anything in the air today. It is difficult to conceive finer lines than those of the Spitfire: every feature is perfection in itself, and merges into the perfect whole. These may appear strong terms, but are surely justified by the outstanding performance which is achieved by the introduction of a higher‐powered version of the original Merlin engine. One believes that, power for power, the Spitfire is still as fast as any aeroplane that has yet flown.
