Arnett provides us with an insightful memoir of her Detroit upbringing in the 1930s and 1940s. This work is also a larger social history of amajor urban African-American community from the Great Depression through the 1943 Detroit race riot. Beasecker, Robert, ed. These letters by a Centreville, Michigan, military surgeon provide a firsthand account of the Civil War. Bennitt describes medical challenges and batde scenes, as well as making several personal observations, while chronicling the 19th Michigan Infantry's diverse wartime experiences. This extensive work traces the genealogy of Albertus Van Raalte and Christina De Moen, whose descendants became perhaps the leading family in Dutch immigration to western Michigan. Albertus and Christina is heavily illustrated and includes an interesting description of the family home as well as accounts of various personal papers. Clements, David. Talking Shops: Detroit Commerdal Folk Art. Detroit: Wayne State University Press. 2005. Pp. 173. Cloth, $35.95. Photographer David Clements presents a unique picture of downtown Detroit. His photographs document artistic creations on buildings that advertise food, entertainment, religion, and other goods and services throughout the city. 154 Michigan Historical Review Dyer, Joyce. The author's father was a long-time employee of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, and Joyce Dyer writes a bittersweet social history of an industry in decline and the impact this decline had on her family. Ebert, Robert R., James R. Neal, and Timothy P. Fijalkovich. The World's Toughest Truck: The Reo/Diamond Reo Story. Yellow Springs, Ohio: Driveline Publishing, 2006. Pp. 160. Paper, $24.95. This book is a history of truck manufacturing at the Reo Motor Car Company (later Diamond Reo) from 1910 to its demise in the 1970s. The World's Toughest Truck is heavily illustrated and details both the company's triumphs and its financial problems. Grimm, Joe, ed. Songquest: The Journals of Great Lakes Folklorist Ivan H. Walton. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2005. Pp. 340. Cloth, $65.00; paper, $23.99. The author finds widespread grassroots activism throughout antebellum Massachusetts. Even more so than the well-known William Lloyd Garrison, this activism was responsible for the unusual (for the time) decisions Massachusetts made to grant black male suffrage, to protect fugitive slaves from federal laws, and to embrace third-party politics before the Civil War.
