Resumo

Identification of the minerals produced by the oxidation of sulfides is commonly complicated by the poor crystallinity of the products. A combination of selective chemical extraction procedures and instrumental techniques such as X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy can enable an unequivocal identification of even the most poorly crystalline minerals to be made, and in favorable cases can also provide information on particle dimensions from magnetic blocking temperatures or hyperfine fields at 4.2 K.
