It was this fundamental experiment which led, 33 years later, to the isolation of insulin by Banting and Best.2Since 1922 further elucidation of the complexities of carbohydrate metabolism has been achieved by physiological experimentation. Numerous studies have led to the knowledge that the metabolic activity of these foodstuffs is not solely under the control of the beta cell hormone of the pancreas, but involves regulatory activities of other endocrine glands.
