Books Received Mark I. West Children’s and YA Books in the College Classroom: Essays on Instructional Methods. Edited by Emily Dial-Driver, Jim Ford, and Sara N. Beam. Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 2015. The contributors to this collection argue convincingly that works of children’s and young adult literature can be used effectively in a wide variety of college-level courses in which the focus is not on children’s literature as such. Approximately half of the chapters deal with the use of children’s literature in other English courses, such as those in writing and in Native American literature. A number of the remaining chapters focus on how books for children and adolescents can be incorporated into courses in other disciplines, including biology, religious studies, and women’s and gender studies. No School for Suckers: Textbooks, Political Censorship and Mind Control in a Democracy. By Jeremy Richard Tompkins. Toronto: Regoczi, 2014. Taking the approach of an investigative reporter, Jeremy Richard Tompkins uncovers a story of censorship of textbooks used in the Canadian public schools. He pays particular attention to the role that the Canadian government has played in suppressing textbooks for political reasons. The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm: The Complete First Edition. Translated and edited by Jack Zipes. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2014. This work brings together all of the stories from the original two volumes of tales compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, which appeared in 1812 and 1815, respectively. Over the next several decades, however, these tales were revised extensively. In this work, Jack Zipes provides English translations of the Grimms’ original versions, accompanied by a scholarly introduction. Reading the Art in Caldecott Award Books: A Guide to the Illustrations. By Heidi K. Hammond and Gail D. Nordstrom. Lanham, MD: Rowman and Littlefield, 2014. In this reference book, Heidi K. Hammond and Gail D. Nordstrom draw upon their experiences in serving on the Caldecott Award Committee, [End Page 294] providing analyses of the art in fifty-six picture books that either received the Caldecott Medal or were named Caldecott Honor Books. Although the authors do not write about many of the older Caldecott Award books, they do cover most of the more recent ones, giving an insider’s account of the process that goes into selecting the winners of this award.
