Resumo

The object of this little volume is to bring within reach of those who have not access to the earlier works on our flora, the most important facts relating to the botay of Mary] and and Virginia. This is perhaps best accomplished "by the reprinting of old records, as the reader will thus obtain an objective view of the works of the pioneers.Jacques Philippe Cornut's storia Plantarum Canadensium, published in Paris, 1635, is undoubtedly one of the ace records of North American plants. This work contains descriptions and illustrations of many species the geographical ranges of which include not only New France but also Vew Eugland and the territory southward to Vzreznza and the Carolznas, Of the numerous species described whose identity has been established beyond any possible doubt, we may cite Flix baccifera (fF.ee) found occasionally in our region, and Adlaxtzm ancricanum (A.A edatum) one of our characteristic ferns 2 low, deciduous woods. In 1640, Parkinson published his 7Theatrum Botantcum wherein eee many plants from Virginia. We may cite again Adlanium pedat uue under the name of Adiaznthune F fruiicosun americanum. The weird, but beautiful Jzudéperus virginiana, ae characteristic ornament of the lower Potoin: ic region and elsewhere, is mentioned by Parkinson.
