Sometimes, though, Rosie is lonely for other dogs, so George gets the brilliant idea of taking her to a dog park—which fails completely at first as Rosie is overwhelmed ("Rosie does not like the dog park. There are too many dogs. She doesn't know any of them"). Even an offer of play from St. Bernard Maurice doesn't win Rosie over, but when Maurice mistakes another dog, wee Fifi, for a play toy, it's Rosie's intervention that saves the day. Despite that inauspicious start, Rosie, Maurice, and Fifi (now Fif, after the sparkly final "I" came off of her collar in Maurice's mouth) decide they want to be friends, and now Rosie's days are no longer lonely. The book's tone is sweetly straightforward, and its directness is particularly appealing when an out-of-her-depth Rosie realizes she doesn't know how to make the friends she longs for; that's a dilemma to which many youngsters will relate. The paneled format and the short sections make this inviting for nervous readers, and Bliss' line and watercolor illustrations bring a touch of comedy to the dog-park scenes without overwhelming the mood. Readers will appreciate the chance to pace themselves over the longer format, and they'll be pleased with Rosie's finally finding her crew.
