ResumoThe monitoring of water resources, both quantitatively and qualitatively, is fundamental for the management of supply of the population dependent on it. The objective of this study was to evaluate the water quality of the perennial valley in the Trussu River by using a water quality index (IQA) in two different periods. The study was carried out in the perennial valley of the Trussu river, Ceará, Brazil, in surface and groundwater, in two different monitoring periods, from September 2002 to February 2004 (data from another research) and from April / 2013 to July / 2015 (data from current research), with monthly collections in the first period and bimonthly in the second. The attributes analyzed were sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl-), nitrate (NO3 -), hydrogenation potential (pH), electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (RAS). From the concentrations of the parameters a Water Quality Index (IQA) was applied for possible spatial and temporal evaluations. The surface waters have not suffered major degradations over time comparing the two periods. Groundwater showed a greater temporal oscillation, but did not differ statistically between averages. In a spatial evaluation, in the surface waters all points were classified as good and the groundwater was classified as distinct points, two being classified as good and two as bad. Although there was no statistically difference between the periods, water quality monitoring and preservation should not be neglected, always maintaining a level suitable for animal supply and agriculture.
