A disappointed Odin offers him one last chance to prove himself: go to Earth to investigate a series of murders that appear to be linked to magic. Loki arrives in nineteenth-century London and finds Amora, a childhood friend who was banished for a mistake Loki made years ago and who now forces Loki to either fall in line with Odin’s orders or fully embrace his powerful magic. As the notorious trickster of both Norse mythology and the Marvel universe, Loki and his MO can be difficult to pin down, and here Lee leans into that ambiguity, portraying Loki as desperately seeking his people’s approval but reveling in his ability to disappoint them, yearning for acceptance but tempted by destruction. While he doubts pretty much every other aspect of his identity, he is refreshingly confident in stating the fluidity of both his gender (“I don’t change my gender. I exist as both”) and sexuality (“On Asgard . . . there are no rules about who can be with whom”). The intrigue and action amp up in the final third of the book as several major betrayals complicate the story, and Loki of course has a few tricks up his sleeve, pulling a fast one on the readers and casting his previous actions in an entirely different light. With his penchant for disruption—for good or ill—fully established, the Loki presented here will delight fans of the legends and the comics.
