In this first installment of a trilogy based on the myth of Persephone, seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera is having a hard time adjusting to life after death. Two years earlier, she was revived after a near-drowning, but no one would believe her story that she had gone to the Underworld, been plucked out of the ferry line by a guy named John, and had escaped after he intimated that she would be staying with him forever. The trouble is that John gave her a necklace that she brought back [End Page 459] with her and that seems to bring danger: people near her suffer and sometimes die, and she's only beginning to figure out why. Pierce's narration moves back and forth between her present in her new island home with her mom's family and her old life in Connecticut, a technique that allows Cabot to firmly establish the premise for the series and that maps enough of the backstory to orient readers to Pierce's dilemma. The book cleverly avoids a maddening cliffhanger ending by concluding with a mini-climax and resolution that set up an intriguing new problem for the forthcoming sequel. Chapter headings excerpted from Dante's Inferno add a dark dimension, but the text itself is more oriented to daylight, as Pierce, though definitely curious about John, whom she now understands to be a death deity, isn't yet in thrall to his mercurial charms and certainly has no intention of becoming the queen of his Underworld. Her pragmatic sensibilities and skepticism make her easy to relate to; although she's got a hot, undead potential boyfriend, she's no Bella, and that's a good thing. Nonetheless, Twilight fans will certainly be among those who will enjoy this solid series starter and look forward to the next installment.
