'The universe called me,' he said simply." From there on in it was a one-way career trip, starting with using binoculars atop his apartment building (and schooling some policemen who came to check out the Black kid messing around on the roof), walking dogs to finance a bigger telescope, being the precocious youngster on science expeditions, collecting astrophysics degrees, and capturing attention with his public speaking skills. Reconnecting with Hayden in time for the Pluto kerfuffle, he weathered that debate and continues to be the face of astrophysics for media audiences. Krull distills Tyson's infectiousness for a picture book audience, serving up such pleasing details as his ballet skill and star-bedizened vests and ties. She also contextualizes, in Tyson's own words, his game-changing contribution as a high-profile Black scientist: "I'd never before in my life seen an interview with a black person on television for expertise that had nothing to do with being black." Optimism, determination, and sheer joy infuse Morrison's paintings, and Tyson's everykid portrayal should have listeners pondering, "Couldn't that be me, too?" An author's note adds supplemental detail, and a list of resources is included. EB [End Page 76] Copyright © 2018 The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois
