Sarah E. West (Macalester College) became a features editor, effective October 15, 2018, replacing Frank J. Convery (University College Dublin), who retired on December 31, 2018.Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE) Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation. AERE presented the Wallace E. Oates Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award for a doctoral dissertation in environmental or resource economics at its annual luncheon at the Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) meeting in January 2019 to Dr. Louis Preonas (University of Chicago). Dr. Preonas received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 2018. His dissertation abstract will be published in the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (JAERE). The deadline for nominations for this award for dissertations completed between August 16, 2018 and August 15, 2019 is August 15, 2019. See the AERE web page for details.AERE Summer Conference. The next AERE Summer Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, May 30–31, 2019. A preconference workshop will be held on May 29. The program organizers are Maximilian Auffhammer (University of California, Berkeley) and Katrina Jessoe (University of California, Davis). The deadline to submit proposals is January 15, 2019. AERE membership rates remain lower than those for other similar organizations, with an option for discounted 3-year memberships for individuals, universities, and institutions, as well as reduced rates to residents, institutions, and universities in low, lower-middle, and upper-middle income economies as defined by the World Bank. (AERE members are invited to consider making a donation to support these memberships.) Institutional and university memberships include a complimentary annual AERE membership for a designated individual, which comes with electronic subscriptions to both REEP and JAERE. AERE will cosponsor two invited speaker sessions—one policy-oriented panel and one session focused on frontier research—at the annual meeting of the AAEA, which will be held July 21–23, 2019, in Atlanta, GA. The AERE Program Committee, chaired by Dr. JunJie Wu (Oregon State University), is organizing the sessions.Midwest Economics Association (MEA) Annual Meeting. AERE is sponsoring sessions at the MEA annual meeting to be held at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch in St. Louis, MO, March 15–17, 2019. Prof. Lea-Rachel Kosnik (University of Missouri–St. Louis) is organizing the AERE sessions. The call for papers is now closed.Southern Economic Association (SEA) Annual Meeting – Call for Papers. The 89th Annual Meeting of the SEA will be held in mid-November 2019. John Whitehead (Appalachian State University) is once again organizing the AERE sessions. The USDA’s Economic Research Service, Forest Service, and National Institute of Food and Agriculture is hosting a workshop “Applications and Potential of Ecosystem Services Valuation within USDA – Advancing the Science,” April 23–24, 2019, in Washington D.C. The Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association and AAEA Land, Water and Environmental Economics Section Workshop are cosponsors. The goal of the workshop is to provide decision makers, researchers, and other stakeholders with an understanding of how innovative methods in economics, advances in theory, and access to new and existing data can be used to improve the valuation of ecosystem services associated with USDA programs and policies.
