It's one thing to talk philosophically about love with her friends Mary Jordan and Evie, but another thing altogether when it comes close enough to touch. When Lucy finds out that her mom is posing for Victor, a widowed artist who has just moved to town, as well as giving him cooking lessons, she worries that something more than étouffée is on the menu. Worse, when a handsome teacher, also new to town, kisses Lucy on the darkened stage of the school auditorium, she is confused by sensations that she knows are just wrong. On the other hand, she is just as confused by the sensations she feels with Dewey, Victor's son, which she knows are just right. Fortunately, the people of Sweetbay have been at this love and life business too long to be thrown by any of it, and Lucy finds that things gently right themselves if people are brave enough to ask for what they want. Les Becquets cooks up a pot of small-town southern life that comes together like a jambalaya—spiced with humor and goodwill, with tasty chunks of occasional conflict and misunderstanding that melt away into a harmonious happy ending. Her secondary characters add colorful energy to the plot, each bringing his or her own hard-won wisdom on the complications of love to the table. The text is permeated by a general sense of warmth and well-being as it explores relationships that haven't always gone smoothly, but endure and grow nonetheless. The result is a piquant dish with a warm, feel-good finish—fans of Ann Brashares and Meg Cabot will definitely want a taste of this one.
