Resumo

The Bayley Scales of Infant Development are widely used to measure the level of functioning of typically developing and high-risk infants. Each of the three editions of the test reflected certain underlying assumptions about the development of cognitive, language and motor skills, affecting the tests' structure and content. The Bayley Scales are used today to assess infants who have more significant risk factors than the infants assessed with the earliest editions of the Bayley Scales; nevertheless, contemporary research supports Bayley's original theoretical perspective on the nature of cognitive, language and motor development.
