The Americans With Disabilities Act began 26 July 1992, and marks the first federal statute prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in employment situations. With this act, the federal government has provided clear and enforcable standards to ensure that people with disabilities are given equal opportunities in the job market and equal treatment by their employers.Under the law's definition of people with disabilities, diabetes may be considered a disability, therefore, this law offers protection for those individuals with diabetes. Some groundbreaking legislation is included in this law.For one, it requires that an employer must have written standards of employment that explain what hiring decisions are based on.This is especially important for a person with diabetes. It means that before the primary interview, a person would know if strenous physical requirements or otherwise would preclude hiring.Another safety measure in the bill addresses discrimination on the job, this includes not making reasonable accomodations for an individual with a disability. For example, in the case of a person with diabetes, this statute prohibits an employer from forbidding an individual to modify his or her work schedule to include time for snacks, glucose monitoring, and other care measures. In summary, this law ensures that all individuals with disabilities will have access to the same benefits, facilities, and opportunities as people without disabilities.
