ResumoThe first issue of Molecular Ecology was published in 1992, so 2017 represents the journal's silver anniversary. Molecular Ecology was founded as a collaboration between Harry Smith and Blackwell Science. In Harry's vision, the journal was to have had a more functional focus, with the goal of connecting changes at the molecular level to how organisms responded to their external environment. However, it was the organismal population and conservation genetics community that adopted the new journal and made it their home. Molecular Ecology has since expanded into many new disciplines, and it now has a strong presence in fields ranging from microbial ecology to animal behaviour to environmental genomics. For the first dozen or so years, submissions to Molecular Ecology expanded at a rate of 30–40% each year. The rate of increase has slowed in recent years, but Molecular Ecology is the second largest evolutionary biology journal (446 papers in 2015) according to ISI Web of Knowledge. Articles published in the journal continue to be well cited, ranking fifth in impact factor (5.95) among evolutionary biology journals by ISI and second in ecology according to Google Scholar's h5-index, which rates journals by cumulative h-index over the past 5 years. Molecular Ecology runs an efficient and friendly editorial office. In 2015, we received 1542 submissions (including resubmissions), with an average time to decision of 37 days, the same as in 2014. Accepted articles are promptly made available on the journal website and assigned a DOI, so time to online publication after acceptance is a matter of days. Articles then typically appear in the printed version of the journal 1–2 months later. The 2016 Molecular Ecology Prize was awarded to Professor Louis Bernatchez of the Université Laval for pioneering and ongoing major contributions to the fields of molecular ecology, and conservation genetics. Louis was one of the first editors to join Molecular Ecology in the early 1990s and has been a mainstay at the journal ever since. He currently serves as our reviews editor and continues to do an outstanding job. Thus, in addition to recognizing his important scientific achievements, we also thank him for his many years of service to the journal. A biography of Louis and his contributions to the field of molecular ecology can be found on pages 413–419 of this issue. To build on the expertise of prizewinners, we recently began inviting awardees to write an essay about future directions in molecular ecology. The first such essay titled, ‘Genetics and the conservation of natural populations: Allozymes to genomes’, was contributed by our 2015 Molecular Ecology Prize winner, Professor Fred Allendorf of the University of Montana. It can be found on pages 420–430 of this issue (Allendorf, 2017). We wish to express our gratitude to our many referees, who are listed at the end of this editorial, for the donation of their time to the journal and to the discipline of molecular ecology. With the transition from the editorial office to Wiley in Hoboken, New Jersey, several measures have been put into place to streamline the peer-review process. Revised and resubmitted manuscripts are now automatically returned to the Subject Editor, bypassing the check-in procedures through which they were already passed as new submissions. Features have been added to ScholarOne to facilitate the identification of potential peer reviewers, and Subject Editors are now empowered to immediately invite their desired reviewers rather than sending the list of potential reviewers back to the editorial office. Wiley is a founding member of ORCiD, which aims to solve the problem of name ambiguity among contributors to research by supplying unique and persistent identifiers. Funders such as the Wellcome Trust, UK, Austrian Science Fund and Swedish Research Council now require ORCID iDs as part of the grant proposal process, and researchers have shown support for similar mandates from publishers. To support authors of Molecular Ecology and to create a better publishing experience, we are adopting ORCID iDs as a requirement for publication. Initially, this requirement will be for the submitting author only. Note that authors will only need to provide an ORCID iD during submission once. For future submissions, your ORCID iD will appear as part of your author details. Wiley is currently in the process of phasing in new page designs for some of their journals in order to optimize them for the online environment and to ensure the service we provide authors is as quick and error free as possible. The new format is expected to lead to improvements in quality, turnaround times and a reduction in formatting errors. We will introduce the new format as new articles enter typesetting in early 2017. Molecular Ecology serves as the intellectual home for the community of molecular ecologists through The Molecular Ecologist blog (http://www.molecularecologist.com/), symposia, our News and Views section, special issues and so forth. Below, we briefly discuss some of the scientific highlights from the past year. In 2016, The Molecular Ecologist blog continued to grow, with a new cohort of regular contributors joining veterans, a successful move towards independent funding, and renewed development of community resources as well as new coverage and media. From September 2015 to August 2016, molecularecologist.com received almost 4800 visits every week – an increase of 11% over the previous year. In February, the site's first-ever crowd-funding drive raised over $1200 in reader support – enough to cover hosting costs and support new experiments in publishing and coverage. Travis Glenn updated his perennially valuable ‘Field Guide to Next Generation Sequencing’ in March, and contributors met readers at multiple conferences in evolution and ecology over the spring and summer, particularly Evolution 2016 in Austin, Texas. Upcoming projects will include curated student contributions to the blog, as well as video posts to a new TME YouTube channel. Blog editor Jeremy Yoder is working to cover new science reported in Molecular Ecology and Molecular Ecology Resources, to continue building The Molecular Ecologist as an online home for working molecular ecologists and a place where the general public can learn about our most exciting work. Once again, Molecular Ecology has featured a number of Invited Reviews on a broad range of topics. We are in debt to the many authors who have taken the time to provide these resources for the community and offer here a brief synopsis of the wealth of information compiled for us in 2016: This past year we published five outstanding From the Cover articles. These manuscripts represent important advances in the use of molecular approaches to address major topics in ecology and evolution. Four of these focused on the genetics of adaptation (Chaves et al. 2016; Parsons et al. 2016; Kirubakaran et al. 2016; Franks et al. 2016), whereas the fifth employed molecular markers to track individuals and reconstruct migratory paths (Bonanomi et al. 2016). Understanding the genetic basis of phenotypic variation is a central goal of molecular ecology, especially for traits that have clear connections to fitness. The beak of Darwin's finches is arguably the most iconic of such traits. Among the ground finches of Santa Cruz, rapid diversification in beak morphology through character displacement has been well documented (Grant & Grant 2006). Chaves et al. (2016) performed a genomewide association study to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying variation in beak size. They found that variation at a small number of loci explains a large proportion of the observed phenotypic variation. As pointed out by Mundy (2016) in an associated News and Views Perspective, this genomic architecture helps to account for the rapid response to selection in this trait following climate-driven changes in food supply. In a second From the Cover paper on the genetics of adaptive radiation, Parsons et al. (2016) performed a QTL experiment to characterize the genetic architecture of the trophic apparatus in Lake Malawi cichlid fish, another textbook case of rapid adaptive diversification. While the traits studied by Chaves et al. (2016) and (Kirubakaran et al. 2016) are clearly heritable, the traits targeted by Parsons et al. are highly plastic and the genetic architecture of the traits is sensitive to the environment in which the fish are raised. Parsons et al. (2016) found that of 22 significant QTL, only one was shared between environments. As Sikkink & Snell-Rood (2016) point out in an accompanying perspective, this study provides good evidence that plasticity arises both from the effects of different loci in different environments and from the environmental sensitivity of different alleles at a given locus. While considerable progress has been made in recent years in uncovering the genetic basis of morphological variation in wild populations, determining the genetic basis of behavioural variation has for the most part remained elusive (but see, e.g., Weber et al. 2013). Populations of cod in the North Atlantic can be either stationary or migratory. Although they spawn sympatrically, genetic and phenotypic differences between them are maintained. In a From the Cover paper, Kirubakaran et al. (2016) performed linkage mapping of migratory behaviour in a cross between the two forms and showed that it maps to two adjacent inversions that suppress recombination between the two forms. The authors argue that the resulting divergent haplotypes function like a ‘supergene’. This work provides an excellent example of how recombination suppression can facilitate adaptive divergence and helps us understand the geographic and temporal scales over which genomic structural variation evolves (Samuk 2016). Understanding the genetic changes that allow populations to adapt quickly to environmental change is a pressing issue. A new and exciting approach is to combine genomics with resurrection experiments. Franks et al. (2016) compared the genomes of two distinct populations of field mustard from southern California before and after several years of intense drought. The resurrection experiment, in which pre- and postdrought populations are grown together, clearly documented that the populations had independently undergone rapid adaptation to this change by a shift in flowering time (Franks et al. 2007). In a From the Cover paper, they followed up on the earlier phenotypic work with genomewide comparisons (Franks et al. 2016) in which they detected numerous signals of adaptation at the molecular level. Interestingly, the loci identified in the two different populations that evolved early flowering time in response to drought are largely nonoverlapping. As pointed out by Hancock (2016) in an accompanying perspective, this suggests that different variants may be responsible for similar evolutionary shifts in these populations. In the final From the Cover paper, rather than using molecular approaches to investigate the genetic basis of trait variation, Bonanomi et al. (2016) used molecular tools to determine whether a trait actually exists. Natal homing is one of the most fascinating animal behaviours. Pacific salmon famously return to their native small stream to reproduce and then die after years of foraging in the open sea. Whether fishes that spawn in the open ocean also have natal homing has long been a mystery. Through SNP genotyping of archived samples from marked and recaptured individuals of Atlantic cod, Bonanomi et al. (2016) show a remarkable degree of natal homing in this fish. As Bentzen & Bradbury (2016) note, this amazing feat is achieved despite the fact that the fish only experience their natal site as larva, yet they swim more than 1000 km back to their natal site to spawn again. These From the Cover papers and accompanying perspectives not only showcase some of the most exiting work being published in Molecular Ecology, but they also demonstrate how previously intractable problems in ecology and evolutionary biology are being solved with new genomic approaches. In 2016, we published three outstanding Special Issues that highlight topics that we deemed to be particularly relevant to the field and on which we encourage more submissions to the journal. The first issue of the year saw the publication of a Special Issue on ‘Detecting Natural Selection in Natural Populations’. The issue opened with an introduction by the three Special Issue editors – Jeffrey Jensen, Matthieu Foll and Louis Bernatchez – that summarized the state of the art for this rapidly growing field (Jensen et al. 2016) and called attention to some of the mounting concerns and potential pitfalls of using genome scans to identify signatures of natural selection. The latter topic was reviewed in great detail in another contribution to the Special Issue by Haasl & Payseur (2015). An important focus of the issue was the development of novel and alternative methods for detecting natural selection that go beyond the most commonly used tests that rely on elevated levels of population differentiation (e.g. Gompert 2015; Huber et al. 2015; Malaspinas 2015; Stephan 2015; Vatsiou et al. 2015). In recent years, there has been great interest in exploring the role of epigenetic mechanisms in ecology and evolution. This is partly due to recent methodological advances that allow for the rapid cataloguing of genomewide patters of one particular type of epigenetic modification: DNA methylation. In the Special Issue ‘Epigenetic Studies in Ecology and Evolution’, we aimed to present some of most exciting research in the field. In the introductory manuscript in the issue, the issue editors, Koen Verhoeven, Bridgett vonHoldt and Victoria Sork, ask what we know and what we need to know regarding the trans-generational heritability of such DNA modifications and their phenotypic effects (Verhoeven et al. 2016). We hope that this collection of manuscripts contributes to a maturation of the field and stimulates new research on the adaptive potential of epigenetic mechanisms. A quarter of a century ago, when the journal was founded, hybridization was typically viewed as rare and maladaptive in animals, but common and sometimes adaptive in plants. Over the years, the journal has published many papers on the topic of hybridization (e.g. in the first issue of the journal, Taberlet et al. 1992), contributing to a much more nuanced understanding of hybridization and its consequences across the tree of life. In our third Special Issue of the year, we take stock of how genomewide analyses have changed our views on the evolutionary and ecological consequences of hybridization. The Special Issue ‘Genomics of Hybridization’ was edited by Richard Abbott, Nicholas Barton and Jeffrey Good, who also wrote an introductory paper for the issue (Abbott et al. 2016). In their words, ‘the issue leads off with a review by Payseur & Rieseberg (2016) of the genomic methods used to detect and characterize hybridization between diverging lineages, and is followed by studies that address the detection and adaptive significance of introgression, hybrid zones, isolating barriers, hybrid speciation and the stabilization of hybrid genomes and the challenges that the reality of hybridization presents to the conservation of biological diversity’. An overall take-home message from the special issue is that even very faint trickles of interspecific gene flow are detectable using genomic approaches and that hybridization appears to be far more frequent across the animal, plant and fungal kingdoms – and its genomic effects far more pervasive – than previously believed. For 2017, we have planned two Special Issues in areas that we think are likely to be of interest for our readership and represent promising areas for future research in molecular ecology. The topics of these issues are ‘The Molecular Mechanisms of Adaptation and Speciation: integrating genomic and molecular approaches’ and ‘Microbial Local Adaptation’. We are interested in ideas from our readers about other developing research areas that are ripe for a Special Issue. Please contact News and Views Editor and Special Issues coordinator Armando Geraldes ([email protected]) with your suggestions about Special Issue topics and possible guest editors. We are grateful for the continued support of the molecular ecology community, as well as the many excellent contributions of our authors, reviewers and editors. Publication of this journal would not be possible without your support, and we are open to suggestions on to how to serve you better. We thank the large number of individuals who have contributed to the field of molecular ecology by reviewing manuscripts for the journal.
