ResumoSignificance Tebboune was appointed in May with a mandate to counter the undue influence of big business over policy, but failed to navigate the factional politics surrounding the ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The new prime minister is Ahmed Ouyahia, a veteran politician who has recently operated as the president's chief adviser. Impacts There could be a public backlash if the new government does not follow Tebboune’s efforts to revive social housing. Ouyahia will be wary of being perceived as a tool of the forces that engineered Tebboune’s downfall. Although the president himself is rarely seen in public, the presidency will still wield considerable power.
