ResumoOver the past few years, The Journal of Comparative Neurology (JCN) has made great progress to meet authors’ needs – we have modernized the look of the journal with a new journal design; eased the submission process by simplifying guidelines and requirements; and continued to provide better peer review with efficient transfer offers. In keeping with Wiley's focus on author experience, JCN has recently started participating in a pilot assessment of a scalable system of transparent peer-review. JCN will publish papers with transparent peer-review resembling the new Publons interface. This pilot, in collaboration with Publons and ScholarOne (both part of Clarivate Analytics), gives authors the choice of transparent peer-review on submission to a journal regardless of the current model of peer-review the journal is operating. If their article is published and authors have chosen transparent peer-review, the peer-reviewers’ reports, authors’ responses, and editors’ decisions will accompany publication, as seen in this example. The peer-review history is openly available on a page hosted by Publons via a link from the article. This remains completely optional to both JCN authors, reviewers, and editors, and reviewers have the option to disclose their names alongside their reports if they wish to do so. Each component has a DOI, ensuring that each element is fully citable. For those reviewers who choose to sign their reviews, the DOIs can also be added to their ORCID records. While this is a trial, it is our hope that this feature will increase visibility for JCN and highlight further an outstanding review process for which the journal has always been known. In recent years, the institutional library landscape has become increasingly complex. As demand is growing for wide-ranging, state-funded Open Access (OA) deals, negotiated at the national level, our publisher must work with governments and funders to secure new licenses that meet their strategic needs. Some governments in northern Europe, where there is wide-scale support at a national level for OA, are looking for licenses that provide access to contents and make it easier for their authors to publish OA. Such licenses enable Wiley to support OA transition in a sustainable and manageable way. They secure, and often expand, access for journals in top research institutions and allow authors to comply with the requirements of their institutions and funders. In the same spirit of transparency and accessibility in publishing and adhering to our publisher's strategy on open science, practices, and access, we are very pleased to announce that JCN is included Wiley's efforts to provide easier access to its contents for all authors. For example, Wiley recently reached a deal with German institutes that allows corresponding authors in Germany the ability to publish OA in any Wiley journal, regardless of the business model, at no charge to the authors. As such authors from Projekt DEAL institutions may publish primary research and review articles OA in Wiley journals, retain copyright of their works, and have access to read Wiley's academic journals back to 1997. Accepted OA articles are published under a Creative Commons license on Wiley Online Library. JCN is included in this initiative as of July 1, 2019. Details on eligibility can be obtained at bit.ly/DEALAuthor and emailing queries to cs-openaccess@wiley.com. This past year, we published a number of special issues in line with our initiative to highlight important neuroscience topics in our journal. The first issue of 2019 was a remarkable special issue on the structure and function of the vertebrate retina that was assembled by one of our Associate Editors, Andrew Huberman (Stanford University). It was followed by two other special issues, one edited by Jon Kaas to honor the late Vivien Casagrande, and the other honoring Shawn Mikula who prematurely passed away in 2018. This special issue highlights new cutting-edge developments in mouse brain imaging and was initiated by Shawn. Our last special issue was edited by Veronica Martínez-Cerdeño who organized the second conference on cortical evolution in 2018 in the Canaries Islands. Moving forward, Andrew Huberman is planning a special issue on the invertebrate visual system. Another special issue to honor Dr. Jack Pettigrew, a pioneering investigator in comparative neuroscience who suddenly passed away earlier this year is underway under the leadership of Paul Manger, Marcello Rosa, Mike Calford, and David Vaney. As always, we are extremely grateful for the commitment and efforts of the contributors and Guest Editors of these special issues that reflect the continued involvement of our journal in promoting novelty and scholarship in the study of the functional anatomy of the nervous system. In addition, we are continuing to expand the scope of interests of JCN, taking on the concept of “comparative neurology” as encompassing the study of pathological conditions and models of brain diseases, within the journal's focus on systems neuroscience. As such we are encouraging submissions in animal models of neuropsychiatric disorders and human brain pathology, and intend to develop the area of human brain imaging. None of this would happen without the tireless dedication of our Associate Editors and members of the Editorial Board who are advisors to the Editor, and serve as JCN's ambassadors in the neuroscience community. Our Board counts now 50 members. This year we are welcoming a new member to our Board, Dr. James Bourne from Monash University in Australia. We look forward to his contributions during his service on the Board. I also had the pleasure of presenting the 2019 W. Maxwell Cowan Award in Developmental Neuroscience at the Cajal Club Social during the Society for Neuroscience Meeting in Chicago, to Dr. Joshua R. Sanes, from Harvard University, for his outstanding contributions to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and structural features that regulate synapse formation and information processing at synapses, and their implications in neurological and psychiatric disorders. This award was presented on the behalf of JC and its publisher, John Wiley & Sons. We are also most grateful to our Publishing Editor, Melissa Asaro, for her constant efforts managing, improving, and promoting our journal, and to our management team, Victoria Scheibe, Lisa Wydrzynski, and Jonard Lozada, who oversee the processing of submissions and special issues, work closely with our contributors and the production team, ensuring that the day-to-day operations of the journal run optimally. Finally, I extend my deep gratitude to the many colleagues, listed below, who participated in the peer-review process of manuscripts for the journal in 2019. As always, our journal can maintain its high standards of quality and its reputation only through their scholarly dedication and professional expertise.
