ResumoSubject Persistent protests. Significance Protests began across Haiti on February 7, demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise. So far, Moise has refused to step down, intimating that he could instead dismiss Prime Minister Jean-Henry Ceant in a bid to assuage the protesters. Whether such a move would have the intended effect looks less and less likely as protests continue. Should they escalate further, it could force Moise into making major concessions or even agreeing to resign. Impacts The unrest will increase pressure upon Washington to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians beyond its current end date of July. The UN Mission for Justice Support in Haiti -- due to withdraw in late 2019 -- may have its mandate extended because of the violence. The protests will deter investment in Haiti in the short term, further exacerbating economic weakness.
