H, Von Thünen-type of agricultural location. An alternative approach is formulated that combines Thünen-type reasoning with A, Weber's theory of industrial locution, an approach used lo explain the distribution of households and industry in Chicago in the 1870V This paper will appear in a forthcoming volume; Spatial, Regional, and Population Economics: Essays in Honor of Edgar M, Hoover, Mark Perlman, Charles L, Leven, and Renjanain Chinitz eds. (London; Gordon and Breach). The present version contains additional empirical material on the location of population and manufacturing employment and on the distribution of service establishments.
