Significance A Grand Alliance led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League (AL) faces a challenge from the recently formed Jatiya Oikya Front opposition coalition. This includes the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), whose leader Khaleda Zia is in jail. Impacts An uptick in election-related violence would raise the reputational risk to Bangladesh. If the AL wins, it will come under pressure to revoke the recently passed Digital Security Act, which the opposition would scrap. Bangladesh’s relations with Myanmar will come under increasing strain over the Rohingya crisis.
