Religion and Society in Latin America

Umbanda is a relatively new religion. It was forbidden since its advent and even today suffers with the negative image created by society. This article seeks to expose what is Umbanda and why, even being a recent religion, it suffers so much prejudice. To do so, four Umbandists were interviewd and we also visited three Terreiros (place where the rithuals taks place), located in Vila Velha: Tenda Umbandista Estrela dos Obreiros de Oxalá, Grupo Fraternidade Luz do Caminho e Tenda Umbandista Estrela Guia. The methods used to make the article were the bibliographic research and participative observation.
