Resumo

A Next Generation Network (NGN) is an advanced, packet-based network that exploits multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies to provide telecommunication services. The objective of NGN is to focus on users and those service-related functions that are independent of underlying transport-related technologies. With the advent of NGN, services that are currently provided by multiple specific network-centric architectures are migrated toward a single, converged, user-centric communication network. NGN provides AAA (Anytime, Anywhere and Always on) access to users from different service providers with consistent and ubiquitous provision of services as necessary. The principles and requirements of Convergence of Fixed and Mobile Networks (FMC) and IP Multimedia Sub-layer (IMS) are likely to deliver all the desired benefits of NGN and should be carefully examined and studied. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research in the area of NGN. The issue focuses on a range of NGN-related topics including cross layer design, mobility, security, services, business models, and novel applications associated with their utilization. Contributions to this special issue focus on all aspects of NGN and present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in future NGN. The call for papers for this Special Issue was overwhelmingly welcomed by scholars from around the world. It attracted 74 submissions from Asia, Europe, and the U.S. covering many topics related to NGN. Each paper was carefully evaluated by at least two reviewers. Based on the review results, we selected 25 high-quality research papers to be included in this Special Issue. We strongly believe that the selected papers will make a significant contribution to researchers, practitioners, and students working in the area of the NGN. Our special thanks go to Dr Mohammad S. Obaidat (Editor-in-Chief) and Mr Gareth Watkins for their valuable support throughout the preparation of this Special Issue. We would like to thank all authors who have submitted papers to the Special Issue and in particular those whose papers have been accepted for this Special issue. Assistance from the editorial staff of the International Journal of Communication Systems is also very much appreciated. Finally, the Guest Editors wish to gratefully acknowledge the support of all the reviewers who have generously given their time to review the papers submitted for consideration for this SI. The 25 accepted papers are divided into three categories. Ten papers relate to NGN architecture, systems, and applications. ‘A Consideration on R&D Direction for Future Internet Architecture’ by Hiroshi Esaki et al. is an invited article that attempts to discuss how to build and deploy the future Internet infrastructure. ‘A Conformance Test Tool for Next Generation Network Applications and Systems’ by Shun-Ren Yang et al. describes the architecture and operations of a test system NGNAS-SIOTP. The design of NGNASSIOTP is based on the Testing and Test Control Notation Version 3 (TTCN-3) specifications for the conformance testing of NGN applications and systems. ‘Heterogeneous Cooperative Relay Selection with Maximal-Ratio Combining for Multi-Radio Access Networks’ by Hsiao-Hwa Chen et al. presents a hierarchical convergence scheme for multi-radio access networks via a heterogeneous cooperative relaying technique ‘Piecewise -Quadratic Harmut's Bases Functions and its Application Problems in Digital Signal Processing Perspective’ by Dhananjay Singh et al. proposes a new basis of piecewise-quadratic Harmut functions and afast spectral transformation algorithm. ‘Cooperative spectrum sensing with imperfect feedback channel in the cognitive radio systems’ by Dong-Chan Oh and Yong-Hwan Lee proposes a hard-decision combining-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme in the presence of a feedback error caused by imperfect channel conditions. ‘A peer-to-peer IPTV service architecture for the IP multimedia subsystem’ by Jaime Garcia et al. proposes an IPTV service architecture for the IMS that combines a centralized control layer and a distributed, P2P-like, media layer that relies on the IMS devices or peers located in the customers' premises to act as streaming forwarding nodes. ‘A Novel Approach to User Data Federation in Next Generation Networks’ by Giovanni Bartolomeo et al. explores a novel, totally distributed solution for data federation, where authorization, management of data localization, and synchronization of federated data are thought to be a part of the meta information. ‘An Efficient Mechanism for Establishing IP Connectivity in Next Generation Networks’ by Rui Campos and Manuel Ricardo describes a new efficient mechanism, named Basic Connectivity (BC) mechanism, for autoconfiguring IP connectivity between connected ambient networks. ‘Scalable packet classification using a compound algorithm’ by Pi-Chung Wang develops a novel compound algorithm for efficient packet classification that combines the techniques of cross-producting and tuple space search. ‘Session Based End To End Policy Control in 3GPP Evolved Packet System’ by Richard Good et al. proposes enhancements to the evolving packet core (EPC)/policy and charging control (PCC) framework that extend the end-to-end inter-domain mechanisms to discover the signaling routes at the service control layer, and use this information to determine the paths traversed by the media at the resource control layer. Twelve papers focus on QoS and mobility management issues. ‘Performance Analysis of a Cell-based Call Admission Control Scheme for QoS Support in Multimedia Wireless Networks’ by Sghaier Guizani and Nidal Nasser proposes a multiple-threshold bandwidth reservation scheme combined with a call admission control algorithm. ‘QoS-aware Fair Packet Scheduling in IEEE 802.16 Wireless Mesh Networks’ by Liang Zhou et al. addresses service differentiation and fairness issues for distributed scheduling of the underlying IEEE 802.16 mesh network and attempts to achieve priority scheduling and fairness at an ingress node simultaneously ‘Handling High mobility in Next-Generation Wireless Ad Hoc Networks’ by Ai Hua Ho et al. examines the impact of node mobility on existing MANET designs They proposed a technique called Dynamic Virtual Router (DVR) to better handle the high mobility of mobile nodes. ‘Proxy-assisted P2P and Multicast Transmission schemes for Layered Video Streaming Over Wireless Network’ by Yung-Cheng Kao and Chung-Nan Lee presents an optimal proxy prefix cache allocation for layered video to maximize the transmission cost savings for three proposed transmission schemes ‘Design and Implementation of ARIP for Efficient Handovers’ by Yong-Sung Kim et al. studies the Access Router Information Protocol (ARIP) which performs a candidate access router discovery and a radio access network discovery in one protocol suite to provide an efficient handover framework for MIPv6 and FMIPv6. ‘Mobile-Initiated Network-Executed Handover in Heterogeneous Accesses’ by Wei-Kuo Chiang and Wen-Yen Chang propose a mobile-initiated, network-executed (MINE) SIP-based handover mechanism to facilitate simultaneous mobility for the IP multimediasubsystem over heterogeneous networks. ‘Mobile user profiles for Personal Networks: The MAGNET Beyond case’ by Ch. Z. Patrikakis et al. presents a methodology for the definition and application of profiles for mobile devices. ‘Inter-domain Handover Scheme Using an Intermediate Mobile Access Gateway for Seamless Service in Vehicular Networks’ by Kang-Won Lee et al. proposes an inter-domain handover scheme for Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) with a new network entity called intermediate-mobile access gateway (iMAG). ‘Authenticated Route Optimization Scheme for Network Mobility (NEMO) Support in Heterogeneous Networks’ by Dong-Chun Lee et al. describes the secure CARO protocol for mobile hotspots. They presented the security (using various attacks) and efficiency (i.e., low computing costs compared with other optimized protocols) of the proposed protocol. ‘Performance Modelling and Optimization of Integrated Wireless LANs and Mesh Networks’ by Yulei Wu et al. proposes a new analytical model to investigate the end-to-end delay in a WMN interconnecting multiple WLANs based on a random access routing algorithm and a general MAC strategy. ‘Optimizing Patching-based Multicast for Video on Demand in Wireless Mesh Networks’ by Fei Xie et al. studies the application of video on demand (VoD) in wireless mesh networks (WMN), a next generation edge technology to provide broadband data access in residential, business and even city-wise networks. The last four papers are about sensor networks. ‘User Authentication Schemes with Pseudonymity for Ubiquitous Sensor Network in NGN’ by Jong Hyuk Park et al. proposes two user authentication protocols which are variations of a recent strong-password-based solution. ‘An Energy-Efficient Node Placement Scheme in Next Generation Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks’ by Naixue Xiong et al. proposes a power-efficient node placement scheme in linear WMSNs, which can minimize the average energy consumption per node and maximize the network lifetime. ‘Energy Distribution-Aware Clustering Algorithm for Dense Wireless Sensor Networks’ by Shudong Fang et al. presents a decentralized clustering algorithm using timers and a recursively updated probability to select nodes with more residual energy to become Cluster Head (CH) nodes and organize other nodes in the form of clusters over slotted time intervals. ‘An Extensible and Ubiquitous RFID Management Framework over Next Generation Network’ by Kideok Cho et al. presents a scalable RFID management framework called SIP-based RFID management system (SRMS), which can support various RFID applications.
