ResumoAbstract The equilibrium resulting from the water initiated polymerization of caprolactam has been investigated for initial water concentrations ( w ) in the range, 0.01 ≤ w ≤ 1 (moles H 2 O/mole caprolactam) at temperatures 220, 235, 250, and 265°C. Based upon the postulate that, at a given temperature, the degree of polymerization is directly proportional to that part of caprolactam converted to linear macromolecules and inversely proportional to the initial water concentration, the following formula, which is a combination of functions, has been derived:
