ResumoRobert (Bob) Scott, Honorary Secretary of the General Council of the Economic Society of Australia between 1974 and 1983, died in Canberra on 5 March 2010, aged 94. When he left school Bob joined the Commonwealth Bank and later studied economics at the University of Sydney as an evening student. He wrote an article on the International Monetary Fund, which was published in the Economic Record. It impressed L.G. Melville (later Sir Leslie Melville), Economic Adviser to the Commonwealth Bank, then Australia’s central bank. He offered Bob a position in the Bank’s Economic Department, later the Research Department. When the Reserve Bank of Australia was created in 1959 Bob transferred to the new institution. At the time of his retirement from the Bank in the early 1980s he held the position of Senior Economist. In the 1950s he spent a year undertaking research in Professor Swan’s department at the ANU. Later he returned to the ANU, conducting projects in Professor Butlin’s Department of Economic History and in Professor Mathews’ Centre for Federal State Financial Relations. In the early 1960s he worked on secondment with the Vernon Committee. As well as being a good economist, Bob was generous with his time. He was editor of Economic Papers for a while and served as Treasurer of ANZAAS for three years. Together with Noel Butlin and Vince Fitzgerald, he edited the Economic Society’s contribution in 1988 to the bicentenary of European Settlement in Australia. This took the form of a reproduction of the Australian Economist, a periodical originally published in the 1890s; included was a separate chapter that Bob wrote on the history of the Economic Society of Australia, which was subsequently extended and published as a monograph. He helped to promote the idea that there should be an annual conference of economists in Australia. Bob possessed an inquiring mind, which was active until a few months before his death. The editors extend their deep gratitude to the many referees who reviewed submissions for The Economic Record in 2010.
