Colonialism, slavery, and trade

The article discusses some of the most important religious associations of colonial Rio Grande do Sul, which are representative of the lay religious experiences in that period. Some of them were made up of local elites (Santíssimo Sacramento and Ordem Terceira de São Francisco). Others, however, were not strictly exclusive (Nossa Senhora do Rosário), since, besides white brothers, they also welcomed “colored men,” both slaves and freedmen. The analysis focuses on the parishes of Viamão, Porto Alegre and Rio Pardo, all of which were founded in the 18th century.Key words: lay brotherhoods, third orders, colonial Rio Grande do Sul.
