During the past year, the Journal has made major strides in reducing the time it takes to reach a decision on a manuscript. We currently are running under 40 days for a new manuscript, and in the last few months have averaged 35 days. This achievement was made possible by the concerted efforts of the office staff, Christine Joyce, Adam Gordon, and Barbara Saper, to track manuscripts carefully. However, this speed of review would not have been possible without the hard work and cooperation of our reviewers and editors. Not only have they continued to provide reviews and comments that are both thorough and thoughtful, but they have agreed almost universally to reorder their priorities so that JCN papers can be handled more swiftly. The increase both in submission and in their quality and timeliness can be attributed to these efforts, and they have improved the Journal significantly. The names of the reviewers who have made this improvement possible are listed below. The Journal is a cooperative effort of a large community of scholars, and we are indebted to every one of them. We also wish to thank the members of the Editorial Board, who have worked especially hard on helping with difficult decisions. As is our custom, the terms of one-quarter of our Editorial Board members lapse at the end of each year. The Editors then review the list of the most frequent reviewers and contributors, and we choose among them those who have provided the most informative and timely reviews, as the new members of the Board. This year, we wish to welcome Deanna Benson, Joel Elmquist, Susan Fahrbach, Patrick Hof, Richard Nowakowski, André Parent, and Wil Smeets to the Editorial Board. We take special pleasure in welcoming Jan Voogd back to the Board, after an absence of two years. We also congratulate Ian Meinertzhagen and Michael Shipley on being re-elected to the Board. At the same time, we wish to acknowledge the important contributions of Richard Bandler, Jean Buttner-Enever, Catherine Cusick, John Edwards, Rusty Gage, Christine Gall, Ray Guillery, and Chris Walsh during their terms on the Editorial Board. John Edwards, in particular, was the prime mover behind the Journal's strong component of invertebrate neuroscience over the last decade, when he served as Associate Editor (from 1992–2001). We will miss him, and we hope that the retiring members of the Editorial board will continue to remain key colleagues in our community, and may serve again on the Board in future years. Finally, we note with sadness the passing of the two most recent Editors-in-Chief of the Journal over the last summer. Dr. W. Maxwell Cowan, who led the Journal from 1968–1979, and Dr. Sanford L. Palay, who was Editor-in-Chief from 1980–1993, both made major contributions to the Journal, which we have detailed in the memorial tributes to them published recently in the Journal.
