ResumoSignals from the ground stations and readies the satellite for communication; the last signal, in effect, turns on the receiver and transmitter.Radiation dam age to this command circuit disabled Telstar I for a fev^ weeks before damage could be circumvented through a special "trick" pulse transmitted to the com mand circuit. If Telstar II could be less exposed to the high energy levels of the electron radiation in the inner Van Allen Belt, the chances for more meaningful in formation are increased; therefore a modified Thor Delta rocket more power ful than the one used for Telstar I is to be made available. It will place Telstar II in a higher and more suitable orbit. Also, a modification will be made in Telstar IPs radiation package, which should give additional information on space radiation.Under terms of the launch agreement, AT&T will provide NASA with com plete scientific data, much of which may be valuable in planning communi cation satellite programs. Also, all ex perimental data and progress reports will be made available to the general scientific community by Bell Telephone Laboratories.Telstar I was launched July 10, 1962.Since that date, it has been furnishing telemetry information on its own condi tion as well as measurements on radia tion and the space environment.Such information is important to the plan ning of any operable satellite system.During the 4-month period prior to its radiation "sickness."Telstar 1 was used in more than 250 technical tests and over 400 demonstrations of voice, telegraph, data, facsimile, telephotos and television.Transatlantic television was demonstrated 47 times.5 times in color.Bell Laboratories believes that Telstar II will provide additional technical in formation on communication satellites, the kind of interstellar space where they must perform, and the operation of ground communication stations.
