Neurology and Historical Studies

As we enter the twenty-first century, it is remarkable to realize that the Journal of Comparative Neurology has now extended across three centuries. The oldest English language journal in basic neuroscience, the Journal was started in 1892 by C.L. Herrick as a way to publish his own prodigious neuroanatomical work, and to provide barter so that he could exchange it for copies of other journals of the day. The Journal has grown to become the choice site for publishing the best work in morphological neurosciences. The remarkable success of the Journal is due, in turn, to the community of scientists who submit their manuscripts for publication, those who review the manuscripts, and ultimately those who read and cite the published work. As in any such enterprise, a few people do more than their share of the work. Those are the individuals whom we seek to identify each year with appointments to the Editorial Board. This year, those completing their terms on the Board include John Morrison, Marion Murray, Brent Stanfield, Nick Strausfeld, and Jan Voogd. We are indebted to them for their service, and hope that they will continue to be active participants in our community. New members of the Board include Bud Craig, Piers Emson, Michael Frotscher, and Carol Mason. Each brings substantial new strength to the Board. In addition, Ford Ebner begins a new tradition by returning to the Editorial Board. Each year the Editors elect new members to the Board from among the most active reviewers and authors, to replace those whose four year terms are ending. We have always permitted re-election, and in fact Jeff Kordower, Aldo Rustioni, Glenn Northcutt, and Ed Rubel were elected to new terms in this round. As I say goodbye to retiring members of the Board each year, I have often held out that I would like to see them remain active, and one day return to the Board.
