Resumo

In his Literatura española siglo XX Salinas established a significant relationship between Romanticism and modernismo. A year previous to the publication of this work this connexion had been developed more specifically with reference to Rubén Darío and his awareness of ‘la nada’ and ‘el vacío de esta vida’ in the admirable study La poesía de Rubén Darío. Since then little more has been added to Salinas’ thesis. While Gullón suggests that modernist innovations ‘respondían a un cambio en el modo de sentir la vida, y ese cambio les acercaba de nuevo al romanticismo eterno’ and the Salinas position is repeated in Silva Castro's essay ‘¿Es posible definir el modernismo?’, neither sheds substantially new light on Darío's work.
