You, considering the matinee, lean into me and – in a playful voice – murmur into my ear, that they should have cast Danny Kaye as Antonius. For years they resisted theater here; questionable of virtue. I guess in these times, there’s something less invasive about cinemas. The one today was nowhere near as grand as Ziegfeld’s in Manhattan, where we watched the New York premiere of this restored version. ‘‘A veritable cinematographic abundance in the land.’’ ‘‘I thought you said they once had acoustically perfect, even opulent opera houses scattered throughout the state.’’ You pause. We accept ‘‘sworn virgins’’ and ‘‘white marriages’’ and wonder why others, who do not even have a dog in the fight, are so certain that the centurion in Capernaum could not have loved or been loved by his slave. ...
