ResumoAbstract An abandoned Christmas tree plantation containing 9m Scotch pine heavily infested with C. heterophyllae was selected for insecticide evaluation. Each treatment was applied to runoff (ca. 2 gal finished spray/tree) to I tree using a Myers Baronet wheelbarrow hydraulic sprayer July 23 when ambient temperature was ca. 25° C. Most scales were in the settled first nymph stage at this time. Pole pruners were used to collect foliage samples from each of 4 sites on each sprayed tree Jul 29 and Aug 12. Samples were transported from the field to the laboratory in plastic bags held in an ice chest. Treatment effectiveness was determined by examining infested foliage with the aid of a binocular scope for the presence of living and dead scales. The first 100 new scales observed were included in the counts.
