Resumo

A death within a school is a traumatic event that touches everyone in the school community. How teachers, students, and administrators respond to loss has ongoing implications for the adaptation of all involved. Therapists Colin Pereira-Webber and Evelina Pereira-Webber explore the topic of loss within a school through a written dialogue. Drawing on their own experiences with loss and with knowledge acquired as working professionals, the Pereira-Webbers consider how school communities can better serve the bereaved. The variety of ways individuals and institutions adapt to a death is a key consideration throughout the dialogue, and the Pereira-Webbers discuss the vital importance of creating meaning within the context of trauma. The authors express their hope that their personal, professionally grounded dialogue will encourage parents, teachers, and administrators to talk openly about loss and to find more effective and humane ways to respond to the bereaved.
