ISBN 978-0-06-233716-0 $9.99 Reviewed from galleys Ad Gr. 5-7 When twelve-year-old Charlie finds a mystery bracelet, she’s amazed to discover that it gives her incredible animal-based powers (such as cheetah speed or elephant strength). Charlie’s friends at her new school soon realize that she’s no ordinary girl, and they help her manage her abilities while also uncovering who made the bracelet—and who now threatens her life. The shadowy bad guys who pop up mostly near the end are complicated and layered, particularly once Charlie realizes that her dad used to work with them before becoming a stay-at-home parent. Unfortunately, the pace until they arrive is slow—the book milks Charlie’s angst at moving to a new town to a perhaps believable but still tedious extent. In addition, there is a predictability to the bracelet discoveries; readers will begin to spot the situations that will require its use long before Charlie does. Even with the issues, there is still promise in this series opener and plenty of cliffhanger drama at the end that may pull readers back to see what happens next. Occasional black and white illustrations punctuate the text, emphasizing key moments. [End Page 138] Copyright © 2016 The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois
