Resumo

Superficial fungal infections or mycoses are common in everyday medical practice. They include diseases such as the dermatophyte or ringworm infections such as tinea pedis (athelete's foot) and tinea capitis ' an increasing problem in some inner city areas. Superficial Candida infections or thrush are often seen in the elderly or immunosuppressed. Inflammation associated with Malassezia, a skin surface commensal, is responsible for the common facial and scalp condition seborrhoeic dermatitis. Their management has been simplified by the availability of several effective antifungal drugs such as fluconazole, itraconazole and terbinafine.
