ResumoDr. Cohen provides 225 references.Curiously, one prodigious contributor to the elucidation of this subject during the past two decades is virtually missing from her bibliography.(The only references to Ackerman's work in Dr. Cohen' s review are superscripts that pertain to synonyms for lentigo maligna, that is, "malignant melanoma in situ" [her reference 10] and to a subtle"clue" to normal melanocytes on eyelid sldn [her reference 95].)For almost 20 years, A. Bernard Ackerman has been an advocate of the notion that lentigo maligna is merely a euphemism for melanoma in situ and that lentigo maligna melanoma is flmdamentally no different clinically, histopathologically, or biologically from other "types" of melanoma, namely, superficial spreading melanoma and acrolentiginous melanoma.1-26 His view is now accepted by many students of the subject.27-31 To review the subject of lentigo maligna and lentigo maligna melanoma without mention of the original work of Ackerman does a disservice to this Journal and its readers.
