At the opening ceremony Professor Boris Rajewsky was installed as President in the presence of the Bavarian Prime Minister, the Bürgermeister of the city of Munich, the Oberbürgermeister of Remscheid and a large gathering of members of the Congress. A gavel made of wood from the house where Röntgen was born was presented to the Congress by the people of Remscheid through their Oberbürgermeister and another gavel was given by Dr. Coolidge. The Congress was divided into six sections: diagnosis, therapy, nuclear medicine and therapy with high energy radiation, radiobiology and biophysics (including radiation hazards and protection), physics and technique, and jurisprudence, economics, teaching and research in radiology. It is not surprising that a meeting with such wide interests should attract a great number of people and over 9,000 persons were recorded as having visited the Congress. Of these, 3,600 were scientific members, 1,600 were wives of members and the remainder were daily members. The number of lectures was prodigious, viz. 922; many of these had, perforce, to be given simultaneously in 12 different lecture halls. The Industrial Exhibition occupied three large halls, and the Scientific Exhibition included 145 stands. The Congress was truly international; its members came from 63 countries.
