Screening the essential oil composition of wild Sicilian oregano

Resumo

The qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oils obtained from wild Sicilian oregano plants has been investigated. Samples were collected from three areas of Sicily namely Val Mazara (M), Val di Noto (N) and Val Demona (D). These areas are based on historical territorial subdivision. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID-MS. Seventy eight compounds were identified representing more than 98% of the compounds in the oils. All samples are thymol-chemotype with variable percentage of γ-terpinene, p-cymene, trans-sabinene hydrate, terpinen-4-ol and carvacrol. Statistical analyses were performed in order to evaluate the variability of the essential oils. Six groups were formed reflecting the compositional differences of the essential oil profiles of the wild Sicilian oregano samples.
