ResumoIn the previous chapter, combat simulations that include single platform, task group, mission analysis and theater level simulations were discussed. The simulation packages SEAROADS, COMO III, ADSS, COSAGE V, CEM, STOCEM, C3ISIM, TAC THUNDER, TAC WARRIOR, TACWAR, SUBSIM, KOSMOS and TRIAMOS were briefly described. A closely related topic in Military OR is war gaming. It is described as a “simulation, by whatever means, of a military operation involving two or more opposing forces, conducted, using rules, data and procedures designed to depict an actual or assumed real life situation” (see Dictionary of U.S. Army Terms 1965). A closely related description is given by Oswalt (1993) “as a simulation of military operations used for research, analysis, education, or recreation that is designed to produce a better understanding of warfare. It involves people in the information processing or decision tasks within an actual or hypothetical situation and uses rules, data and procedures to guide action”.
