The widespread use arose because injectable pentamidine is approved for treating P. carinii pneumonia, and it became common practice to administer solutions using a nebulizer. Aerosol pentamidine is now the most frequently used experimental drug for disease related to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).The first reports of efficacy in prophylaxis in rats appeared in 1985, and prophylactic use has grown, in spite of the paucity of well designed and supervised clinical trials....References1.
