Significance Incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is hoping to retain his position. Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Impacts Modi’s recent liberal market reforms, which have caused protests in some parts of India, are unlikely to be much of a factor in the poll. A poor election result for Congress would worsen the party’s internal divisions over leadership. Bihar will struggle to curb its COVID-19 outbreak, exacerbating the state’s economic and social woes.
