AbstractAbstractThe impact of English on Italian in the world of advertising is an acknowledged fact, but the remarkable frequency of Anglicisms in the commercial nomenclature of Italian footwear has so far remained a neglected aspect of it. Italian shoes have long been a significant force in the shaping of fashions in European footwear, particularly in terms of design, finish and colour. When it comes to selling them to Italians, however, this international reputation counts for little, and the principal concern of publicity and salesmanship is often to play down the Italian origin of the merchandise and to associate it instead with the prestige widely enjoyed in Italy by products of Anglo-Saxon manufacture from America and Great Britain.
