Autores ResumoNiels Bohr spent some months in a parsonage in Vissenbjerg on the island of Funen, and the following year he went to the same place to complete the writing of his dissertation. In the autumn of 1909, and again in 1912, his brother, Harald Bohr, went to Gottingen and other places in Germany. From the autumn of 1911 to the summer of 1912, Niels Bohr was in Cambridge and Manchester, and from 1914 to 1916 he was again in Manchester. During these periods of separation from his brother and mother, Niels Bohr wrote and received frequent letters. Because some of these letters throw valuable light on Niels Bohr's early career, and on his personality and attachment to his family and, in particular, to his brother, a selection from them is presented in the chapter with English translations, where required. In the English version, a number of explanatory notes concerning individuals or specifically Danish customs referred to in the letters are provided. With a few exceptions, Danish place names are not translated, and their locations are not indicated.
