Resumo

Densities of lithium borate glasses are reported over a wide range of compositions. A semiempirical model for density has been developed which makes use of the structural ideas of J. Krogh-Moe. The results lend considerable support to the notion that the densities reflect the underlying atomic arrangements in a simple manner. Carbon dioxide retention occurs for extremely high lithia content glasses prepared from lithium carbonate but is shown to have no effect on density.
