ResumoIn 1963, it was reported that the fermentation broth of Streptomyces refuineus var. thermotolerans contained a component referred to as ‘refuin’ which had activity against experimental tumors (Tendler and Korman, 1963). The active component of this broth was identified as anthramycin [Leimgruber, Stefanovic, Schenker, Karr and Berger, 1965 (2)] an antibiotic subsequently found to possess antitumor, anti¬microbial, amebicidal and chemosterilant properties. The following paper reviews the biochemical pharmacology of anthramycin with particular reference to its interaction with DNA.
